What Does Everyday Endurance Mean?

I am often asked, “what does Everyday Endurance mean?” Many believe that it reflects that every day I am training for some sort of endurance event. While that is partly true in that I try to incorporate various elements of training into each day, i.e. physical, mental, recovery, etc., that is not what I had in mind when I thought of the name.
When Everyday Endurance came to mind, I was thinking about the majority of participants in races and events. Those of us that have careers and families. Those of us that have a daily commute and yard work to do around the house. Those of us that attend our kid's activities on the weekend. The “everyday athlete” if you will.
I am not trying to discredit the elite, sponsored athletes who run 2:20 marathons. What they can accomplish is quite remarkable. Yet those who balance careers, families, and training schedules are just as impressive. Those that will pay hundreds of dollars for race fees and travel expenses to battle cut-off times at the back of the pack are the ones that have earned the most cheers in my book.
As with most people, I am sometimes stressed out at the end of the week from the day-to-day. I look forward to my weekend long runs because for me they are a way to decompress and unwind. The long days I spend on the trail sometimes give me the opportunity to go several hours without seeing a single person. I often come home from a run feeling fantastic. I feel like a whole new person. I know others can relate.
By pushing ourselves physically and mentally through endurance sports, we find something within ourselves that can help within our regular lives. It gives us an appreciation for what we have and confidence in ourselves that we can accomplish something significant. We look forward to new challenges. By getting out of your comfort zone once and a while you realize that your potential is far greater than you realized.
Everyday Endurance is a philosophy, a way of life. It is for like-minded people that look for less comfort and more life.
